Challenge: Manage complex rail assets while staying compliant

Alstom Maintenance Rotterdam (formerly Shunter) faced the complex and business-critical task of maintaining a diverse range of locomotives, train sets, and wagons for various parties in the railway sector. Ensuring efficient processes, compliance with stringent regulations (including ECM and ISO certifications), and managing the intricate logistics of parts were crucial challenges.

  • The Solution
Since 2013, Alstom has relied on a partnership with Lama Empowers for the implementation and management of IBM Maximo Asset Management as their central ERP system. The IBM Application Suite supports the entire organization, from work orders and invoicing to HR and inventory management. The maintenance plan is structured according to the ECM methodology.
  • The Implementation
The implementation of IBM Maximo occurred in phases and in close collaboration with Alstom, with a focus on leveraging standard configuration options to simplify future upgrades. Despite the diversity of assets and processes, and the need to seamlessly align the software with Alstom’s specific working methods, the foundation was established within six months, after which the system was further developed in sub-projects.
  • The Success Formula
The long-standing and successful collaboration is based on mutual trust, entrepreneurship, flexibility, and ownership from Lama Empowers. This approach enables both parties to strengthen each other and jointly achieve optimal asset management.
  • The Future
The recent acquisition by Alstom offers opportunities for further expansion of the collaboration, including the integration of Alstom’s IoT platform with IBM Maximo for real-time maintenance information and the utilization of the latest developments within the IBM Maximo Application Suite.
